The Grenada Revolution Online

Concerned Grenadians in New York Devoted to the Overthrow of the Communist New Jewel and a Return to Constitutionality in Grenada.

[The document is three typed pages long and undated, most likely via Gairy in the U.S. 1980. All pages are reproduced here. The second page has a faint "12." at the top, and the third page a faint "13." at the top - puzzling unless one considers it part of the River Antoine Issue booklet] When you see [sic] this means the word before [sic] is reproduced as in the original.

FROM: Concerned Grenadians in New York Devoted to the Overthrow of the Communist New Jewel and a Return to Constitutionality in Grenada.

We have addresses of Grenadians abroad all over the world and we want them to read all about Bishop and his communist gang. We will be sending news of them from time to time.

See what they have done in the short time since violently seizing power:

They have revoked the constitution and are ruling by decree.

They have refused to call early elections which they promised.

They know they cannot win an election in Grenada.

They have put together a revolutionary army of youths and rough-necks many of whom have already lost their lives through lack of knowledge of use of guns put into their hands.

They have put guns everywhere in Grenada and are now in difficulty controlling them.

They are muzzling the opposition parties and jailing their leaders and members.

They have refused to release the Ministers and other well respected Grenadians they are holding in custody without trial since seizing power.

They have infested Grenada with Cubans and Guyanese. There are about 40 Cubans and 10 Guyanese training their soldiers. They also have Cuban doctors, teachers and housing and fishing Personnel and are using Mt. Royal which they promised to turn into a Museum to house some of the Cubans.

They have seized the Cocoa (sic)-Cola factory.

They have closed down Torchlight newspaper.

They are restricting Grenadians in the amount of money they can take out of the country.

They have frozen many people's bank accounts.

They are bent on preventing Grenadian's 18 Years–45 Years from leaving the country.

They are only allowing School children half-day of school and the other half has to be spent in the fields.

They have tapped all telephones in Grenada and they are censoring all letters.

They have taken an about face on everything for which they criticized the Gairy Government. One of their main criticisms was Independence for Grenada. Now they are happy to be called Prime Minister and Minister and they are fighting among themselves for leadership.

They have forgotten about the setting up and cost of Embassys (sic) abroad about which they strongly protested. Now they have not only accepted them but are setting up new Embassys (sic) in Cuba and other communist countries and are purchasing high priced houses for their Ambassadors.

They also have forgotten about their criticism of excessive travelling undertaken by the Gairy Government and have already done more travelling in Cuba and other communist countries and elsewhere than the Gairy Government ever did.

They have also forgotten about their criticism of the Gairy Government on Human Rights and are only brain washing their Grenadian supporters by telling them that it is necessary to keep the Ministers and others in custody to protect their illegal regime.

They are arresting and jailing any one in Grenada who dare to speak against the revolution.

They have fired and continue to fire all members of the Civil Service and others they think are not in favour of the revolution and are making appointments which can be considered as putting square pegs into round holes.

They have appointed a Barbadian lawyer well known as a communist who was banned throughout the Caribbean to help draft their illegal laws.

They have ruined the tourist trade and people are afraid to visit Grenada.

They are propaganda artists and have the communist way making lies look like the truth.

Hear what the Trinidad Guardian recently wrote about them:

There are now 70 Prisoners and if Allister (sic) Hughes were as openly critical of Maurice Bishop as he used to be of Gairy, he would have been in the next cell because freedom of speech and freedom to criticize and to comment is not permitted in the newest Soviet Satellite in the Caribbean, Grenada. Grenada has now become a full-fledged Red Camp with some 3000 Castro supplied troops, according to popular count, and a recent figure supplied by the Miami Herald. Bishop and his men have shown all the classical signs of Communist agitators, namely say anything, do anything, promise anything, just get into power and then apply the hammerlock. Get control and then show them who is boss. They are beginning to apply the pressure. First, the Cocoa (sic) Cola factory; next the Torchlight, then 20 more people arrested, and between it all an offer to receive information from any one. An open request for brother to inform on brother, child on parent, sister on brother. That is the evil monstrosity that has become of what was once the Isle of Spice, The Island in the Sun.

It is now Paradise lost and if it has to be regained, it must be done quickly for the records show that when communists gain power, unless they are removed or flushed out within a Year, then they become entrenched and the public simply has to live with them and to grin and bear the repressions and deprivation of every imaginable freedom. The people of Grenada must understand that it is their problem. If they are to be saved from Maurice Bishop and his Red dictatorship, then they must set about saving themselves and they must do so quickly, for each day he will grow stronger and his buddies from Cuba and the Soviet Union will make sure that he is harder to get rid of.

ALTHOUGH ERIC GAIRY WAS CALLED A TYRANT MAURICE BISHOP WILL MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE AN UNBLEMISHED LAMB WHEN HE IS THROUGH WITH GRENADA.

Bishop has started his role. He condemns the United States, he holds to the hard doctrine line of complete communism with the State tightening its iron grip on the throat of every Grenadian. And the people of Trinidad & Tobago, who are accustomed to their happy go lucky way of life are beginning to look up at Grenada with great concern for what they are seeing is a disease occurring too darned close to their borders. They want to fight with Trinidad, they have started with Caroni about sugar as the Soviets want our oil and are going to use them to get it.

Russia has one thing in mind - the Globe - and the Americans can no longer pussyfoot and deal softly. Without the Soviets none of the Satellites can survive on what Bishop has exchanged for is an ever thickening line to the Soviet Union via Cuba. Therefore there is no time for complacency and every action must be taken and all necessary help given to defeat Bishop and his men.

Free Grenada is dead. There will be no further democratic elections, there will be [unclear] fear and deliberate silencing of news. The future does not look good for Grenada under Maurice Bishop and his men.

What a shocking and ridiculous record by these Communists in such a short time. Do they expect to get away with all this?

As the saying goes

As you live so you die, and those who live by the bullet will perish by the bullet.

Only a fool will not admit that Grenada is finished if Bishop and his gang are allowed to stay in power much longer and we have therefore started the resistance movement to kick them out of power.

We therefore solicit your support and that of the free press everywhere whose fair and accurate criticisms and publications of events taking place will knock some sense into the heads of these communists. We also seek the help of World powers - Britain, U.S./Canada etc - in keeping a close watch on Grenada and taking whatever measures are necessary to check the trend started in the Caribbean by Bishop & his gang to take power by means other than the democratic process, and to crush their attempt to introduce communism in Grenada thus giving Cuba, who is openly and actively supporting them, a foothold in the Caribbean.

The Grenada we knew is no more. There is not a shred of freedom left, everybody is tense, and the old slogan of their supporters that all is quiet in Grenada is gone. The joy that overtook some Grenadians when the Gairy Government was violently overthrown by Bishop and his gang has rapidly turned into hatred for the gang because they are rapidly turning Grenada into a communist Country and all those who thought they knew what they were doing when they accepted them are now beginning to wonder and crying for their removal.

What has happened in Grenada is pitiful and people can only take so much and no more. Things have now reached the boiling point and Grenada is now a powder keg which once ignited will be difficult to contain.

WE ARE ASKING GRENADIANS NOT TO BE FOOLED BY BISHOP AND HIS COMMUNIST GANG AS THEY WILL NEVER SUCCEED AND WILL PAY DEARLY IN DUE COURSE. THEY ARE PLUNGING GRENADA INTO CIVIL WAR AND WILL HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE OUTCOME. EVERY PIG HAS ITS SATURDAY*, AND ALSO THE PIGGIES, AND TIME WILL TELL. SO ALL WHO IN THE WAY CLEAR OUT THE WAY AND LET GRENADA BE FREE AGAIN.

WE HAVE STARTED TO FIGHT SO COMMENCE YOUR DUTIES TO BRING ABOUT A SWIFT END TO BISHOP'S ILLEGAL AND OPPRESSIVE REGIME.

*NOTE: "Every pig has its Saturday" is a saying. The saying refers to the slaughter of fattened pigs on Saturdays for the weekend cooking pot.
